You might like the concept of owning a dog but in reality you really need to consider whether adding a pet is the correct decision for yourself and your family before rushing into this decision.

Do You Have Enough Space at Home?

First of all you need to consider whether you have the appropriate space for a dog in your home. Is it big enough so that they have space to roam around? Ideally you would have a backyard too so that they can go outside and not be trapped indoors all day. Have you also got enough space so that they have a sleeping area and somewhere to play? These will be the first things to consider.

Can You Afford to Look After Them?

Dogs cost money, so ensuring you have money to look after one is essential. These are just some of the expenses you can expect to pay for a puppy/dog on a regular basis.

  • Vet bills such as vaccinations, check ups, worm/flea treatments and microchipping.
  • Dog food
  • Pet insurance
  • Toys
  • Blanket/bed
  • Treats
  • Leads
  • Collar and tag
  • Dog shampoo/cleaning products
  • Dental products

Have You Got Time to Provide the Necessary Care and Attention?

Now more importantly, do you actually have time in your busy work and home schedule to look after them? There is no point dreaming of owning a dog when in reality you do not have time to take them for walks (some breeds require lots of daily walks), play with them or spend time cuddling. They should not be cooped up in the house all day by themselves, so as long as you do have time for these things then it will suit your situation.

Will They Get on Well With The Children?

As children, particularly younger ones, can be unpredictable around new things, they may not understand how to approach a dog properly. If they are really young it is best to allow your dog to get used to its surroundings first before you attempt to leave them alone in the same room together. You could always try to train your dog to be child-friendly when they are still new to prevent any unwanted incidents happening. But you also need to teach your children how to behave around the new pet as well so that they understand better.
