Have an aging dog? Here are some things can improve quality of life for aging pup
As responsible owners, caring for our dog at every stage of life is something that we need to take seriously. Make adaptations in your home
Like you would adapt the home of an older relative, you will also need to make sure the living environment of your older dog is suitable for both their needs and comfort.
Of course, doing this doesn't have to be difficult. Indeed, there are several products you can invest in that are very helpful here. The first of these is a dog ladder, which is really just a doggy sized staircase that allows them to access places that are higher up such as the couch or your bed, something that enables them to keep living the life they are used to even if they have trouble with the joints.
Another option is to invest in something like these Pawpedics dog beds as they will not only keep your dog cool in the hot weather but also support their joints. The latter being essential for your family pet as they age.
Adapt your dog's diet
While it is important to keep an eye on what your dog is eating at any age, as they get older some more significant changes may need to be made.
In particular, ensuring your dog gets plenty of fiber to keep its system regular is essential. Additionally, as your dog may move less as they age they may need fewer calories to remain at a healthy weight. Of course, it's always best to consult with your vet before you make changes to your dog's diet, as they may have recommendations that you have not considered.
Change the type of exercise they do
Walking is the number one form of exercise for dogs, along with playing fetch. Unfortunately, as your dog gets older these types of exercise may become harder to do. This is particularly the case if they have trouble with their joints.
Happily, there are options to consider. The first is to reduce the number of walks you go on or the length of each walk. Alternatively, why not try an activity like swimming which can be much less taxing on the joints as the water supports their weight. Although, lakes, streams, and oceans may need to be avoided here if they have not experienced swimming yet. Instead start slow so your dog has time to get confident, use a life vest, and ensure they begin in shallow, safe water.
Visit your vet regularly
Last, of all, the older your dog gets the more important it is to see your vet on the regular. Indeed, even if there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your pet, frequent checkups are the best method of keeping things that way!
