Treats

When a dog has done something good, it is important to give them a treat so that they can understand what they did was worth rewarding. When you treat your dog, it is important to give them nutritious treats so that they can reap the benefit of a reward and nutritious snacks for the good of their health.

Train in a quiet place

Using a quiet place to train your dog will ensure that they listen and that you have your full attention. In this quiet place, ensure to have no distractions as these could hinder the success of the training.

Quiet spaces will also ensure that your dog is happy, as they can have one on one time with you, which is crucial to them being attentive and understanding of the training. If your dog is frustrated or upset, then it might not adhere to the training. Thus, your time will be wasted.

Once you have mastered a cue or behavior, then you can move to more distracted environments. This is also when the focus cue's we mentioned earlier can help regain their attention if they do get distracted, then you can resume with the training after you regained their attention. Start slow though, don't go from a quiet, no distraction environment to a dog park. Try starting in the backyard and gradually introducing more distractions.

Train in short sessions

Many dogs will loose focus in long sessions. Therefore, using short sessions but more often will help them stay attentive and focused on the learning. We usually recommend 3 short sessions per day, 5-15 minutes. If you can keep their attention longer and the are eager for more, then by all means keep rolling. You could train them on their daily walk by asking them to sit at the roadside before crossing, fetch their ball, or stop barking at strangers.

Be patient

There is no use in thinking or believing that your dog will be obedient within a week. It can take some dogs longer than others to pick up skills and adhere to the training techniques.

No matter how long you train for, it is important to be patient. If you give up, then you will never meet the goals that you had hoped for.

Be fun

A dog will likely listen more if you offer fun activities with the learning. As well as giving them treats, playing music and being playful will help them interact better. It will also let them know that being obedient is fun and rewarding.

You could have fun after the session if you are training them something serious. A little dance or run around can make the session end on a good note, which will grab their attention for the next time you request them to train. ]
